The London-based company Penumbra Publishing Ltd has developed
The Storebrand Virtual Museum, a digital museum containing a selection
of almost five hundred works of art from Storebrand's corporate
art collection. Metallic Avocado acted as external consultants
on user interface design and quality control.
Publication of the museum in an electronic format will allow Storebrand
to promote wider knowledge of their substantial collection of Norwegian
and international modern and contemporary art, as well as to present
it in a museum context. Important works by artists such as Andres
Serrano, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Bjarne Melgaard, Mari Slaatelid
and Richard Serra are presented in a virtual environment where
the user may move from room to room and select the displayed artworks
for detailed viewing and background information.
The user navigates the museum interactively, so that he or she
can survey a number of rooms from pivotal points before moving
in and viewing works at close range. Penumbra's unique high-speed
relational database is always available in the background and can
be accessed by clicking on any artwork. A flexible structure allows
the inclusion of films and slideshows on special topics, as an
educational facility for detailed information about specific artists
and artworks.
The museum is cross-platform and is installed on a custom-made
info-kiosk in Storebrand's headquarters in Oslo. It is also installed
on a portable computer that can be used in conjunction with a projector
for external presentations.
Storebrand Virtual Museum was opened in April 2002.
